Dear BNS Families,

Happy New Year!

There has been a chill in the air these past few weeks, one that has made me even more grateful for the warmth, joy, love, and compassion I feel every time I'm in the building at BNS. Our children are learning that the world is full of wonder, goodness, and possibility—and that we all have a responsibility to make our society the best it can be.

There are so many grown-ups to thank for this. Our teachers are masters of their craft. Each one seems to truly love the work they do and the children in their care. Our administrative team is seasoned, smart, and devoted to the community. Our amazing After School team has been going above and beyond to engage kids in many fun activities. Sarah and the Band team continue to bring the magic of music to our children every week. We have had SO MUCH parent involvement this year—our last PTA Meeting was standing room only and committees are humming. Our School Leadership Team is a wonderful community and a great way to learn about what's happening academically at BNS. The group meets monthly at 3:30 pm in the Library, and all are welcome to join.

Dear BNS Families,

As the year winds down, we’re reflecting on the incredible learning and growth happening at Brooklyn New School. Students are fully immersed in the hands-on, project-based activities that define BNS—whether using Class 1 levers to lift each other or channeling water flow at the Salt Marsh, they’re thinking critically and solving real-world problems.

There are many ways for families to connect with student learning this month—3rd and 4th Grades have Shares, 1st Grade has a Math Morning, and 2nd Grade has a grade level family meeting.

December calendars went home on Friday, and you’ll find reminders of key dates below and in Konstella. Don’t miss the PTA meeting on Friday, December 13th, at 8:20 AM. We hope to see you soon!

Dear BNS Families,

Thank you, thank you, thank you! You have been showing up to support the school in so many ways this Fall. We've seen you "oooh-ing" and "ahhh-ing" at classroom shares, chaperoning field trips, helping at Kindergarten Lunch, creating beauty with the Arts Committee, rocking out at BNS Fest, writing grants and newsletters and social media content, making donations, participating in SLT and PTA meetings, selling fresh, affordable produce at the Farm Stand (and yummy treats at the Bake Sale), and so much more. The school and our kids are better for all of your efforts and we are so grateful.

Celebrate the end of the school year at our family dance party KidChellaStock next Friday, May 17! We will have food, music, dancing, dress up, and art activities! All are welcome!

We have a busy January, with bake sales, movie nights, and more. Plus, we are already starting to plan for spring events like our annual Makerfest 3/16! Read more below, and consider getting involved!

Happy Holidays! We know this is always a busy time of year: full of fun, festivities and a little bit of fatigue. The next newsletter will go out on Sunday, January 7th. Have a wonderful and safe holiday and a happy new year!

We made it to the final month of 2023. Kudos to you all! Thank you to everyone who volunteered their baking skills for the pie fundraiser and the bake sale.

BNS classrooms are full of activity and the building is buzzing with energy! From fun games to learning the names of their classmates and getting to know each other, to finding their way to the bathroom and exploring the library and the Big Yard, students are growing more comfortable in their school.

Welcome to the 2023–2024 school year at BNS! We hope you and your family have had an enjoyable summer and are ready to come together for an amazing year of learning and community. The start of school brings new teachers, new classrooms, and of course, new friends.

Please read some important messages below, especially the one about traffic safety on Henry Street during drop-off and pick-up. We also hope you'll get involved in our Green/Food Committee and come to our next movie night!
