PTA Newsletter No. 8

Dear BNS Families,

Dear BNS Families,

Happy New Year!  We hope everyone enjoyed the break, reconnecting with family, resting and thinking about what is to come in the New Year.

Big thank you to all teachers, staff and parents who contributed to the wonderful one-of-a-kind BNS Community in 2022! Thanks in particular for the holiday donations, and thanks to the Class Parents for coordinating such nice things for our teachers.

The BNS Fundraising Committee also has new merch coming in including cute winter hats - updated link to Online Merch Shop will be posted and in-person sales coming soon!

Payments are due with program registration and must be received by January 16 to reserve a seat for your child.  Scholarships are available for all programs and will be awarded January 25.

Please reach out to bnsworkshops@bns146.org with questions.

Help Us Keep Track of Your Child's Warm Weather Items!

As the weather gets colder and gloves are needed we suggest Corded mittens for your kiddos ... gloves on bands or strings threaded through your coat sleeves to keep them safe and not lost. Please label everything - winter gear means lots of new labels are needed.  2 gloves need 2 names (first and last!), one on each glove. It is so nice to reunite found items with children.

Movie Night FRIDAY 1/20, 5:30 - 7:30pm

Friends of BNS announce our next movie night will be The Lego Movie on Friday, January 20th from 5:30-7:30pm in the auditorium.

We will provide childcare, pizza and unlimited popcorn. You may drop off or accompany your children. If your children are enrolled in Aftercare, they may attend directly at 5:30pm.

Pick up is 7:30 pm SHARP, no late pickups can be accommodated.

Tickets are PAY WHAT YOU CAN AFFORD - pizza, popcorn and 2 hours of childcare are included. All proceeds go to the BNS PTA to support your child's education - and sponsor fun events :)

Only students currently enrolled in BNS may be dropped off. All other minors MUST be accompanied by an adult.

We still need volunteers to help clean up from 7:30-8pm, all volunteers get free tickets!

Annual Appeal and BNS Calendars

Many families have already received the BNS annual appeal, along with a special gift from the PTA (a BNS 2023 wall calendar). Because of the size of the calendars, the PTA handed out as many as possible in person during the month of December, but this week we plan to mail annual appeal letters and calendars to all households who we think have not yet received one. If you don’t have one yet and don’t receive one in the mail in the next week or two, please reach out to Sara Gable at sonethousand@gmail.com. And please consider contributing to the annual appeal – no amount is too small, and of course there are many ways to donate to BNS, including Amazon Smile, volunteering, merch and bake sales, and more. Thank you for your support of the BNS community.

BNS Needs Towels and Hangers!

Do you have any gently used clean towels to give away ? Please consider donating them  for our BNS Swim program.  Towels can be dropped off in the main office, room 207.

Our lost and found shed is in need of some hangers to help us keep the items better organized. We could use 40-50 plastic hangers (weatherproof and outdoor friendly). They can be hung on the steel bar on the left in the shed.

Lost and Found Volunteers Needed

We are looking for volunteers to take 5-10 minutes on Wednesdays and Fridays either am or pm to spruce up the content of the Lost and Found shed. You can volunteer directly on the Lost&Found Social group on Konstella for a single week or multiple weeks.

Social Media

BNS is on Social Media! Follow us and stay informed on all BNS happenings. Find us on Instagram (@thebrooklynnewschool) and Facebook (TheBrooklynNewSchool). We are always looking to source and post great photos of your kids involved with BNS activities, so feel free to email them anytime to the Social Media Team: Photos@bns146.org

DOE's School COVID Policy

If your child tests positive for COVID, please email dandm@bns146.org as soon as possible.  Anyone who tests positive needs to stay home for at least 5 days after the positive test or start of symptoms.  Anyone who tests positive must have improved symptoms and must continue to wear a mask through day 10.

BNS will notify all families in a class impacted by a case, whether a student or a staff member tests positive.  We will also send home 2 home test kits with each member of the classroom.  Current DOE/DOH policy prompts families to test children on day 4 and day 5 after exposure.  Children do not need to stay home after exposure as long as they are symptom-free.  It is strongly recommended that anyone exposed to COVID wear a mask for 10 days after exposure.

You can check the DOE's COVID Safety website for updates about these policies:
