PTA Newsletter No. 14 - 4/16/23

Dear BNS Families,

Dear BNS Families,

Welcome back from Spring Break! We hope you had an enjoyable, restful week off. We've got lots of exciting spring events coming up, plus planning has already begun for end of year events - though it's hard to believe, the end of school year will be here before we know it!

Sincerely,
Your BNS PTA

School Picture Make-Up Day is Tuesday, 4/18

PTA Meeting This Tuesday 4/18 at 8:20 a.m. - Learn About Math Across the Grades

Join us in the art room (Room 105B) or on Zoom for our next Families as Learning Partners session: an interactive math workshop. You will be working in small groups to experience how students work collaboratively to develop math concepts and problem solving strategies.

We'll also be discussing the following ideas as alternatives to our traditional Spring Fling Auction and would love to have people there who are interested in helping organize!

  • BNS night out: A ticketed adult-only event where we (parents, staff, and teachers) can dress up and have a great time.
  • An art-fair and auction: It would take place on a weekend day at the school and be open to the community at large, as well as online.
A cultural fair and auction: Celebrating and presenting the diversity in our community through food, crafts, and traditions, it would take place on a weekend day at the school, and be open to the community at large.

NY State ELA testing begins on Wednesday, 4/19

Opt out here if you do not wish your child to participate:

Parking Etiquette at BNS

Please remember you are part of a community - hundreds of other parents and children and the neighbors around 610 Henry.

Remember:

  • Do not park at the barricades.  Your car may block an emergency vehicle.
  • Do not double park in front of our school building.  A double parked car blocked an ambulance in the fall carrying a neighbor on Rapelye Street to the hospital.
  • Do not block the crosswalks when you park.  We have no crossing guard to help families navigate Henry Street right now, so it's especially important to leave the crosswalks open.
  • Let's not be selfish; let's be kind and generous.

Parent Volunteers Needed for Upcoming Events!

We need parent volunteers for our final Movie Night of the year 5/12 and our big dance party festival KidChellaStock 6/2 - we can't have these fun events for our kids if we don't get enough volunteers, please email elenatatelmt@gmail.com if you can help out!

Help Us Meet the BNS PTA Yearly Fundraising Goal!

The BNS PTA is committed to raising $280,000 this year for BNS programs and supplies.

So far, our community has raised 42% towards this goal. With ten weeks till Watermelon Day, and summer vacation, we ask that you contribute to this effort if you can, so that we avoid falling short of our commitment. No amount is too small. And, please consider asking about corporate matching at your workplace; it can make a big difference.

Breast Cancer Awareness Bake Sale Thursday 4/20

Please support our next UFT Breast Cancer Awareness Bake Sale on Thursday, April 20th from 2:00 - 4:00 by baking and bringing in treats plus offering to volunteer at the tables after school.  The bake sale will happen next to Rapelye Street near the corner of Henry Street. If you would like to help volunteer or provide items, please contact Margaret at margaret@bns146.org

DOE's School COVID Policy

If your child tests positive for COVID, please email dandm@bns146.org as soon as possible.  Anyone who tests positive needs to stay home for at least 5 days after the positive test or start of symptoms.  Anyone who tests positive must have improved symptoms and must continue to wear a mask through day 10.

Current DOE/DOH policy prompts families to test children on day 4 and day 5 after COVID exposure.  Children do not need to stay home after exposure as long as they are symptom-free.  It is strongly recommended that anyone exposed to COVID wear a mask for 10 days after exposure.

You can check the DOE's COVID Safety website for updates about these policies:
