Letter From Leadership 5/31

Dear Families,

Student-voice: the thing we hope students who attend BNS will leave knowing they have it and how to use it. We encourage students to advocate for what they need and want. Kindergarteners in Doug’s class have been studying water, where it comes from, where it goes, and what they can do with it. They have been exploring the faucets and how we get water into the building so that we can have it for all the things we need. The question they want to hone in on is, “How does the water get around in this big building?” What a great question!

Together they brainstormed, “Who is the best person to help us answer this question?” Of course, they decided on our head custodian, Mazda. As a class, they wrote a letter to Mazda advocating for themselves and delivered the letter to him in the cafeteria. The letter reads,

Dear Mazda,

We want to see the pipes in the basement please!

Love, Doug’s Class

Every aspect of this process was student-centered from interest and focus to execution. They are leading their learning and that is exactly where we want them to be - at the forefront of their educational journey.

Learning like this is happening in every classroom, in every grade.  On Friday June 16th, which will now be a half day of school for all students, with dismissal happening at 11:30am, we invite all families in to see the work your children have done all year. This celebratory day allows you to see your child's work, and sneak in a preview of what's to come next year.

We look forward to seeing you this month!
