Brooklyn New School is in year six of the Diversity in Admissions plan. There are now over 90 schools participating in the DIA plan, designed to help foster diversity within the school. The DOE prioritizes students who identify as low income for a certain percentage of open seats each year. You can indicate on your application if your child meets this criteria.
Children are admitted to BNS by lottery. Pre-K and Kindergarten children are admitted through Myschools, and 1st-5th grade children are admitted by independent lottery conducted by BNS.
There is no entrance test and no pre-admission interview. BNS is not a zoned school; children who live in Brooklyn are eligible to apply. Low income families who live in Districts 13, 14, 15, 16 & 17 have priority for all open seats after siblings are admitted.
Families should re-apply every year; paperwork does not carry over from year to year.
We encourage all parents to come to a virtual BNS Open House before they apply. The Brooklyn New School will host several virtual Open House events so prospective families can ‘visit’ the school and learn about our approach and our community.
Each Open House is appropriate for families applying to pre-K to 5th grade.
Pre-K: The application period starts February 24, 2021 and will close on April 19, 2021. Families with children born in 2017 should apply through Myschools, the DOE application platform, or by phone at 718-935-2009.
Families are encouraged to fill out our Pre-K Outreach Questionnaire to give us more information about our applicants. This information is not shared with the DOE, and it does not affect the lottery. It helps us with our outreach.
Kindergarten: The application period started Dec 10, 2020 and closed on January 19, 2021. Families with children born in 2016 should apply through Myschools, the DOE application platform, or by phone at 718-935-2009.
Families are encouraged to fill out our Kindergarten Outreach Questionnaire to get on our waitlist and to give us more information about our applicants. This information is not shared with the DOE, and it does not affect the lottery. It helps us with our outreach.
Grades 1-5: Fill out our grades 1-5 application here. No other step is necessary for grades 1-5 applicants. We will do a lottery for every open seat in the summer.
