Admissions for 2021

New this year:  D17 residents are eligible to apply.

Wait lists for the current school year are closed.

Brooklyn New School is in year five of the Diversity in Admissions plan.  There are now over 90 schools participating in the DIA plan, designed to help foster diversity within the school. The DOE prioritizes students who identify as low income for a certain percentage of open seats each year. You can indicate on your application if your child meets this criteria.

Children are admitted to BNS by lottery.

There is no entrance test and no pre-admission interview. BNS is not a zoned school; children who live in Brooklyn are eligible to apply.  Low income families who live in Districts 13, 14, 15, 16 & 17 have priority for all open seats after siblings are admitted.

  • Families interested in Pre-K apply through the DOE’s Myschools and fill out a BNS Pre-K outreach questionnaire in February 2021. This questionnaire tells us about our applicants. It does not affect the DOE lottery.  We do not share the information.
  • Families interested in Kindergarten should fill out a BNS Kindergarten outreach questionnaire.  This questionnaire tells us about our applicants. It does not affect the DOE lottery.  We do not share the information.
  • Families applying for grades 1-5 are asked to fill out a simple application available now.  BNS will fill seats in grades 1-5 over the summer of 2021 and into the early fall. There is a separate lottery and wait list for each grade.

Information for the application:

  • Our name is Brooklyn New School, PS 146
  • Our DBN (school number) is 15K146
  • Please fill out the income verification question as part of the Myschools application.  If you qualify as low income, you will receive a priority in admissions for all grades.

Families should re-apply every year; paperwork does not carry over from year to year.

We encourage all parents to come to a BNS Open House before they apply. The Brooklyn New School hosts several Open House dates each year so prospective families can visit the school and learn about our approach and our community first-hand.

Every Open House is appropriate for families applying to pre-K to 5th grade.

  • Open house dates are scheduled for fall and winter.
  • Open Houses are for all grades, Pre-K – 5, and include a tour of the school. These events are geared towards adults.
  • Open Houses begin in the Auditorium and last one and a half hours. Parents DO NOT need to register or sign up for an Open House.

Check the DOE website for information about elementary school enrollment.
