BNS has always existed as a reimagining of what public school can be. However, as a part of the larger NYC school system, we acknowledge that we too can and have perpetuated a white supremacist system without intent and strive as a community to actively decenter whiteness. Our parent Diversity Equity & Inclusion Committee has closely examined the structures that exist at BNS through the lens of race and equity. During our recent School Leadership Team (SLT) meeting, the DEI committee shared the completion of one component of their hard work, a year in the making. As a result, they crafted the mission, vision and principles below. These statements are being reviewed and adopted across all of our governing bodies to serve as a guide making sure we stay true to BNS’s founding principles.
We believe in creating a school culture of belonging
We believe in building collaboration skills that build emotional intelligence
We believe in creating lifelong learners

Diversity Equity & Inclusion – Mission/Ambition Statement:
BNS is committed to Diversity Equity & Inclusion. The Diversity Equity & Inclusion Committee will support the needs of students, parents, educators, teachers and administrators to foster a school community where diversity is uniquely acknowledged and celebrated each and every day – in how our students learn and interact with one another and how our teachers engage with parents and teachers who are black/brown and marginalized. We will strive to create an inclusive culture where listening and acceptance creates the truest sense of belonging; where we always challenge the paradigms and perceived notions of equality and equity; where we speak out and up for any forms and acts of racism; where we manifest the deepest and most profound new reality that all of our differences, whether ethnicity, race, gender preference, sexual orientation, physical ability, age, religious beliefs or socio-economic status are a reflection of a beautiful tapestry of the BNS community. As a connected community nurturing our future curious, lifelong learners, we never tire of our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
As such, we will endeavor to:
In addition to the parent workshops that are underway because of the hard work of DEI, be sure to keep an eye on our future weekly letter which will introduce the DEI-aligned fundraising principles. We are very excited about this important work as it is a true call-back to the foundational principles of Brooklyn New School.
All for now,
Anna, Diane & Malika
